Award winner
Chemical Tankers gSPARROWHAWKh and gSUNBIRDhthat partially employ duplex stainless steel equivalent to SUS329J1

 Applicant: Kitanihon Shipbuilding Co., Ltd.
Reason for selection:
gChemical tankers play an important role of transporting liquid chemical products consumed in petroleum and chemical industries both at home and abroad. In particular, for cargo tanks of chemical tankers carrying such highly corrosive substances as sulfuric acid and nitric acid, stainless steel is used. In most of the chemical tankers built in Japan, SUS316L is used. But in recent years, soaring prices of main ingredients of this grade- nickel, molybdenum, etc.- have presented a big problem.
For the captioned chemical tankers built lately, duplex stainless steel has been adopted, which has higher strength and corrosion resistance than SUS316L but with lesser amounts of these rare metals, and furthermore can accept efficient high heat input welding. In light of these advantages, the duplex stainless steel has been employed for the first time in the world, and this has enabled the applicant to reduce the risks associated with soaring rare metal prices and to design the latest type of tankers compatible with environmental regulations, leading to increased demand for chemical tankers and revitalizing the transportation of chemical products.
Stainless steel types used: Duplex stainless steel (NSSC 2351)
